IRIS
Name: Iris
Gender: Mare
Breed: Thoroughbred x Standardbred x Mustang
Genetics: ee/aa/Rr/nLp
Age: 6 years
Arrived in MUSTANG: Spring year ten
Coat Color: Varnish roan appaloosa
Height: 16.2 hh
Eye Color: Hazel
Personality: Iris believes she is cursed is some sense of the word, she had equine juvenile epilepsy but unlike many horses the 'fits' did not cease as she aged although they did decrease in commonness. Iris sees visions when she has a seizure, a lot like a dream or a nightmare although sometimes flashes of her past or what she believes to be her future. She believes that she is transported to another world during her seizures where someone is chasing her down. She often dreams (outside of her seizures) she is running away from someone. She is saucy and loud, blunt to the point of rudeness although she can be tactful if she believes it will get her somewhere. Power is very important to her since she’s learned how little power mares yield in this world and has come to realize that by manipulation she can get what she wants. It’s very important for Iris to be the sailor of her ship and the decision maker in her life. She’s independent and has been caring for herself long enough to realize she doesn’t need others to be happy.
She acts a lot more confident than she is because she has come to realize that you teach people how to treat you. She has been bossed around enough in her life and won't accept ill treatment at this point. She is embarrassed about her disorder and will not tell anyone about it unless they have witnessed a fit, which she tries to avoid. She believes that most people will reject her if they know about her epilepsy as it is a sign of weakness or bad genetics in her mind. It has her marked as impure.
History: Iris was born to a family that was disappointed that she was a female, her father having desperately wanted an heir. Her seizures began before she was three months of age and although her mother insisted that she would grow out of it, and that she had seen this before and it would cease by the time she was one. The seizures however did not stop and her father decided that she was more a liability than anything. Iris' mother was given a choice, either let him kill their daughter or to leave with her. Magiere decided to leave with Iris and they forged a meager life on their own. Magiere was already really too old to bear a child when she had had Iris and as Iris grew into adulthood her mother seemed to wither away. The winter before Iris turned three her mother passed away from an unknown disease that had slowly been draining the liveliness out of her. At the age of three she met a stallion named Marzel who took her into his herd. He was cruel and cold but she needed the protection and so she endured him, he treated her as damaged once he found out she had epilepsy and she endured that as well sure that she could never make it on her own. She became pregnant that very same summer but when she gave birth her son was small, blind, and weak. It was unlikely that the colt would live but Iris begged Marzel to give him a chance. Marzel turned a blind eye to her pleas and killed her first and only child right before her eyes. Iris fled that night away from him and promised herself to never compromise her happiness for safety. Iris spent the next year in a small group of mares that looked after each other but as time passed they dispersed, each finding her own calling in life and when Iris's best friend Lilac left their group for a stallion Iris decided that it was time that she too found something else out there for her.
