Elaine is a very quiet mare due to the fact that she is mute, to compensate for the lack of verbal communication she is very expressive and as a by product of this is terrible at hiding her emotions. However it is rare for her to ever want to hide what she's feeling as it is the only way that she can make most equines understand her. She also has learned a written language that was developed by her family herd as a way to communicate with outlying subherds and she perfected it as it was the best way to get her points clearly across to others in her herd. Outside of her herd she creates temporary works of art with the writing as a way to remember her family and calm herself down when she gets frustrated.
A very kind mare, Elaine would never think of leaving someone behind and would risk her life in a heart beat if it meant that someone she cares about will live in her place. Strong willed the fae does exactly what she wants and often doesn't stop to consider the repercussions of her actions. Many refuse to see this side of her as she is quickly written off as the mute who can't do anything except listen to others talk. It is easy for some less sensitive equines to assume that she doesn't have thoughts due to the fact that she can't clearly articulate them, but that assumption would be wrong in so many ways.
Being unable to tell anyone what her name is is very frustrating for her as she hates being called by anything besides her given name. Of course that is a rather unrealistic expectation as no one outside her family and friends know it and they live far away in her homeland. She will tolerate some nicknames that are given to her, but there are others that she will flat out refuse to recognize.
History:
Elaine was born to a small herd of primitive equines that was part of a large tribe a nomads headed by her uncle. Though she knew who her parents were, she was really raised by the whole herd, each equine delighting in taking care of the quiet filly as she looked about the world with bright green eyes. Her silence for the first few months of her life rose no red flags to her caretakers as they believed that she would speak when she was ready and simply continued to teach her about their life and their unique written language that was made by scraping their hooves into mud to make simple lines that condensed entire sentences into a single character. Elaine took to the writing like a fish to water, elaborating it in her own little ways so that it was turned into art (at least in the herd's eyes) and finding a way to express herself through this odd language.
She lived contentedly in this way for four years until a wandering mare came to visit their herd and tell stories about the distant lands beyond the ocean that bordered the tribes' land. El became enraptured with the storyteller and listened to every word that she said. After the mare left El grew more and more restless, unhappy with the quiet life that she had always led and one day decided to strike out to explore new lands and meet new equines. With the blessing of the elders she began her journey and decided to travel first to the north where she had heard that the land was made of ice.
A couple of days after she had arrived to the northernmost part of her continent the ice began to crack beneath her hooves and she soon found herself floating adrift on a thick sheet of ice, floating farther and farther away from her homeland. As the days went on the sheet began melting away and she became weak from lack of food or water, struggling to keep her eyes open she finally relented and collapsed.
When her sand encrusted eyes opened again she was washed ashore on a beach of Mustang and a soft autumn rain was drizzling from the heavens. Here is were her story begins.
