HAVE I FAILED YOU? | Something was wrong, and it had been so for quite some time. Misery had not been acting herself in many moons, but Cicero had not gotten the chance to speak with her about it privately. First Raskogr got stolen, and then Isadore joined them for a brief time. Somewhere in there Nerissa came to visit, and the heavens knew how that meeting had sent Cicero into a spiral of anger and envy and pity. He had thought they were friends, but now she’d quickly become his only enemy. It is now late Fall, and when Cicero lifts his face into the breeze he can detect the fresh scent of winter curling its icy tendrils through the pale sky. The snow is not far out, and the lush green grass in the Valley has already given way to crispy stalks of brown and yellow. But it is not the coming winter or the dreary sky that has Cicero in a slump. Misery is gone, and she has been for quite some time. Cicero has his suspicions. How could he not? Misery smells different, and her belly has been growing larger every day. But how could that be? They’d still yet to make love, and he feared that she had gone off and found another stallion – one more willing to shower her in his affections. But of course Cicero cares for her; he simply knows not how to express his feelings. Ever since he claimed this damn land he has felt nothing but pressure and the overbearing sense of the failure that he has become. Such emotions do not make it easy to openly express affection for another. Add that to his list of failures. He finds himself pacing back and forth along the southern border. Alpine Terrace rises up in the distance and the Indian Plains stretch out far as his summer sky eyes can see. But where is she? Where is his queen? She has been absent far too long, and his worry has taken hold and is twisting his gut in very unnatural ways. Even if he does not often admit it, he needs her. Even her silent company is more of a solace to him than one hundred chattering voices. If he has lost her, he will too have lost himself. CICERO AHH <3 |
