Brego glanced around the trees hoping for a sign of the cave that was said to be here. His dark coat was covered with the newly fallen snow signaling the arrival of winter. He hoped Saffron and their little one could make the journey. He kicked himself for not moving before the snow arrived, but put it off waiting for the foal to get older. He had been searching for a place to reside while leaving his lady alone to bring their foal into the world and susceptible to stallions who would very much like to add to their harems.
He shook the snow from his body and called through the air hoping she could hear him. His breath fogged as he called and the falling snow seemed to add to the mystery of this place. One could only tell where they had already been by the tracks in the snow, but only if they were not covered by more falling snow or overrun by some other creature in this forest. He stood in the middle of the trees a dark shadow against the whiteness of the snow.
He waited till he called again making sure he would be heard. He still had not found the entrance to the cave, but did not want to wander far just in case Saffron came and could not find him. Still he was torn between staying there and finding the entrance so they would not be wandering together in the cold. His thick coat seemed to have changed to a deeper bay then his spring coat and though he did not blend into his surroundings well it did keep him warmer when the sun was out. For now the sun seemed to be content with hiding itself in the grey of snow clouds and thus the land turned into a white wonderland.
For a moment a long lost memory came back to Brego and he closed his eyes hoping to see it better. "My champion is ready to win this race. What about yours?" Brego recognized him from his other memory as his former owner a kings son Theodred. "I am ready cousin and so is Arrow." This voice was familiar as well and he remembered another frequent visitor to the stables and a most unlikely one at that. It was the kings son's female cousin Eowyn who rode as well as any man if not better and could fight like any man as well. Brego shook his head anxious for the race to start. "Well my dear cousin prepare to be sorely upset." Eowyn remarked. "Why cousin?" Theodred replied. Eowyn smiled and her horse reared taking off. "I remember now." he said bringing himself back to the present. "It was a winter long ago and we raced through the snow. She beat us by a hair and he was a very good sport about it. She on the other hand loved to tease him about it." he said to himself. Then he grew quiet and called for his mate again wanting to keep the past in the past.
