You take the full, full truth, then you pour some out And as we're drifting off to sleep all those dirty thoughts of me They were never yours to keep
The cold night clung to the slopes and those who roamed them like static material. Not blessed with a thick coat, the charcoal woman shivered heavily, feeling her skin drape her like an oversized coat. Soon she would reach double figures in the number of summers she had spent on this planet, and old age was not something which came unaccompanied. The legendary speed and stamina which was combined in her breeding was laboured now, her blue orbs couldn't see as far as they once could, or as well in the dark. However Chess was still undoubtedly beautiful, and despite her near emaciated state you could stand her next to any Queen in the land and they would still be in the shadow of the tall, dark widow.
Months had passed since his death, and still she thought of him, of the strange relationship they had shared. What was stranger was that she didn't mind.
The former Queen made her way across the slopes, finding herself alone once more. Truth be told, the silence was nice; peaceful. Herd life was busy and stressful at times, so to be in charge of no-one but yourself for a while was a treat to say the least. After a moment of appreciation for the quiet, the sharp-as-ever hearing of the widow honed in on approaching footsteps from behind, and a familiar smell breezed into her nostrils, allowing a smile to bloom on her face.

“remember when, you still could swim”Brunhilde had now reached an age that belied all truths about her upbringing - she was, and always had been, independent of her mother and father. It hadn't taken long for her to escape the nest, and she'd rarely (if ever) stepped foot on Jungle Rock Island, the so called "true" place the wolf family belonged. She had been a woman on her own path to revenge (although her vengefulness belonged to nobody, and was for no-one). She was not close to her mother, though she did hold the ebony woman in very high regard (not that she would share that particular piece of information with anyone) and her father… well, the news of his death had shocked her, but not softened her. So it was strange, but not unexpected, when Chess arrived at the slopes. How her mother had known where she was could have been considered odd, but Brunhilde felt no doubt that Chess had stronger instincts than hers - that she had hidden talents that her father had never truly appreciated, much the fool to him. So she gently followed the trail of faint footmarks in the ground and shared in a quiet smile with her mother before she fully approached, her lithe body silent as she stepped through the scrubby foliage. She and her lover, Fire, had planned on making this their home - before she'd been stolen from him. Now she belonged to someone else, Calla, a hard woman apparently made of steel and iron. Brunhilde had respect for her, though she hadn't been overly appreciative of her new predicament. However, she would not allow such thoughts to cloud her from what was truly important today - her mother. Chess was a strong woman, certainly, but even the strongest woman could be brought to her knees by grief. Brun approached, all elegance and beauty, her blood a perfect mix of her parents, and allowed a gentle word to escape, just for today; "Mother"

I guess I Thought we were invincible Remember when The distance wasn't insurmountable
It had been too long since the mother had laid eyes on her first born. The young woman was more beautiful than Chess could have ever imagined, with skin as smooth and vibrantly coloured as her father, if diluted a little darker by her own colouring. She turned to face Brunhilde, hearing the whisper of a vipers' tongue say "Mother." She reached out her nose, submitting to every mothers' wish to touch their child despite knowing what this child was like.
"How've you been?" The spider smiled, letting the question gently float into the air, finding solace in the presence of family. Vanguard and Gracelyn weren't far away, but the young man was very protective of his little sister and kept her hidden from the world while her heart ruled her head - she was yearning more and more for the grandchild of Paradisum; that sly murderer Schindler. She would kill the blue-skinned bastard before and die of old age herself before Grace saw him again. Rage swirled with desperation passed over Chess' face before she regained her composure again, realising that since his death, control of her emotions had been much more difficult than before.

“remember when, you still could swim”For once Brunhilde did not turn from her mothers touch, rather enjoying the familiarity of her scent and the comfort of having her near. She'd never have admitted it, but Brun was not as strong as she seemed - though she wouldn't break, and would never reveal weakness, she grew thin at times, and tired. It was nice to have kind, gentle Chess here to soothe those weak spots. "How've you been?" Brunhilde considered the question, glacier blue eyes watching her mother closely. She knew she had a brother and a half sister now, waiting at home for Chess - unless they were as independent as she had been. It must have been a stretch for the spider to care for all her children, especially with a dictator for a herd leader. Instead of answering, Brun asked a question of her own; "How are Vanguard and Gracelyn? I should like to meet them at some point." She paused, adding as an afterthought - "When Fire and I take this land I will get you out of there, mother."

Twisted motives Drive me in a circle I'm dying to untangle
Brunhilde for once allowed someone to touch her, and for a brief moment it seemed like she even liked it - the girl may cause nothing but mayhem, but home comforts were wanted by even the coldest of hearts. Chess smiled, eyes softening and creasing around the edges however much the girl might hate it. She couldn't stop her own mother loving her, no matter what she might do or say, and make no mistake, the charcoal woman knew what kind of person Brunhilde was. But who was she to rule a childs life? She didn't want to demand anything but respect from her children, their lives were their own to live. As long as the dear things were happy.
In classic Brun fashion, she replied with a question. "How are Vanguard and Gracelyn? I should like to meet them at some point." And she should meet them soon, but Grace wasn't thinking straight, and Vanguard was far too wrapped up in his grief (and trying to escape it by caring for Grace's fragile mind). As much as Chess was sure that the siblings would get along, Brun's offhand way of dealing things would upset Vanguard especially, she felt the pain of losing his father was still too fresh. "Soon - maybe when things have calmed down on Jungle Rock. But they are well as can be expected - I do worry for Grace though." She sighed before confiding her deepest worries to her daughter. "She is infatuated with the King, Schindler - I fear she will run from us back to him and get herself tangled in something she can't escape and doesn't understand. She's so young..."
Suddenly the mare felt old, useless as she squeezed her eyes tight shut. Her entire body tensed as she fought a thick wave of intense anxiety. But Brunhilde broke through with the rough chimes of her voice. "When Fire and I take this land I will get you out of there, mother." Chess looked up at her, orbs shining with disappearing tears. "I hope you do."
