Early morning had brought with it the song of birds. The sun was still hidden beyond the horizon though the stars had begun to fade away, slowly being overruled by the growing sunlight. The chestnut tobiano made her way though the open fields at a quick pace, pale blue orbs straight ahead towards the cover of the trees. Her bodice disappeared into the forest and she slowed her pace to a steady trot. A hefty sigh escaped her maw; a sigh of content now that she felt more hidden away. She'd heard rumors that there was a beautiful place here. A place where water fell from high rocks and the foliage was sweeter than any known. The mare had searched for these lands before, but had yet to find them. A peaceful place to rest and fill her stomach.
The dove maneuvered easily though the trees, her slender legs providing a long, even stride. In the distance, a faint sound emerged. A crashing sound. Xenosa pricked her audits with interest now and craned her neck as she picked up speed. The sound began to become louder and the mare became more anxious. Suddenly, all fours were jerked from beneath her frame and she crashed to the ground. Quickly, the mare threw herself onto all fours and stood, systems swiveling, nostrils flared, and pools searching for any sign of danger. The woods were still quiet. With a flick of her banner, the femmora looked behind her, finding the cause of her stumble. A large rock, hidden away by the thick brush. Finally, she shook her carcass and began to move along once more, keeping her pace a walk this time, and watching her footing more carefully.
Moments later, the rumors were proven true. The mare peaked through the trees and looked in wonder at the scene before her. A waterfall cascaded down into a small pool of water that brimmed with aquatic life. The grass was green, even in the dim lit morning. Xenosa moved from the cover of the trees, looking around cautiously before dipping her maw into the cool water. Her body shuddered in delight as the cool liquid made it's way down her throat. She then moved along, helping herself to mouthfuls of the foliage. It was sweet and everything others had said it would be. She rolled in the grass then, before standing. Her white splashes were now stained with the green grass and dirt in few places. For once, she was calm. There was no constant fidgeting, no tense muscles. The tobiano looked as if nothing in the world could have swayed her sense of safety. But, this point of relaxation was short-lived. Birds had quieted ever so slightly and Xenosa could almost feel another presence. She looked around now, her crania high as she searched for anything that would mean trouble. Her harks thrust backwards as a soft rustling was sound. Merely squirrels. She snorted and dipped her maw to continue grazing at the grass, though she couldn't shake the feeling that someone - or something - was around. Finally moved by her unease, she made her way closer to the waterfall, turning her body so that her back was to the water while she was aimed straight for an opening in the trees. While she was no stranger to fighting for her life, her instincts had always screamed run before they screamed fight. After all, her long legs and slender frame made for a quick getaway. She was quick and sure-footed, and she definitely knew it.

K L A U S Klaus had always been on a set schedule, he would wake up about the same time that the sun would rise every morning and then he would munch on the morning grass still wet with dew before starting his day. However, today was different. He had awoken much earlier, it was early morning and the shadows of night still lingered around MUSTANG. This had caused Klaus to go into a frantic run. If he didn't start his day off the same way that he did every day he would remain frazzled for at least a day, some times he would remain frantic for almost a week. Either way this was not going to be a good day.
As soon as Klaus had opened his eyes and realized that it was dark out he had jumped up and took off running. That had been a good ten minutes ago. Now Klaus' long, thick legs were stumbling beneath him, his body was moving faster than his hooves had ever thought about. His heart was fluttering and every breath was growing quicker and tighter, he knew that he was about to give in but he wouldn't stop running until he collapsed with fatigue. Sweat droplets were forming on his slick, auburn coat, and his nostrils were flaring as every breath got harder. It wouldn't be long now until everything was okay. He would fade off into another darkness that he called home, it was his dreams or perhaps his nightmares. And then it happened, he collapsed to the ground, his heavy weight pushed his knees into the ground, dirt forming around his body and staining his velvet coat.
And he just laid there, his body falling into a deep slumber and his eyes staring blankly off into space. He could lay on the woodland floor forever, the coldness of the dirt chilled his body, calming him for only a few minutes it seemed like. He laid there for a few hours but he thought it had only been a few minutes. After resting he pulled himself up off the ground and shook the loose dirt from his coat, his limbs were shaky and his eyes were wide and wary but he no longer felt the need to run. He had gotten that out of his system, now he just needed to find somewhere to wait out the day, he couldn't come in contact with another equine. He didn't think he could handle a real conversation today.
But of course, a higher power had other plans for him.
Klaus stumbled from the forest and out into the open and he was face to face with a painted mare. She wasn't literally in his face but it felt that way. Klaus' throat grew tight and his lips trembled as he opened his mouth to take in a large breath. He didn't know what to do. He was frozen in time.

The sun had finally made it's way over the horizon, shining gold in all it's glory. Warmth began to spread over the lands and Xenosa, who had finally relaxed to a great extent, was dozing off. The sound of the water crashing into the pool was soothing. Birds chirped many songs from the trees and the dove's eyelids lowered more and more. Xenosa shook her crania, wanting nothing more than to keep awake. But, the feeling of safety draped over her like a warm blanket and her eyes finally closed. For a moment, she stood there, nape lowered, body swaying in the gentle winds as she began to drift into sleep. But soon, that was stripped away.
A crunching among the trees made her restless once more. Her dial snapped up and harks pointed forwards, listening to the approach of this unknown enemy. A grunt escaped her, almost as if she wanted to warn this mystery being to stay clear of her presence. But, her fear kept her quiet. Who ever it was - whatever it was - perhaps it would choose a different course and not come towards her. She pawed the earth as anxiety began to seep into her bones. Her body began to quiver slightly and her feet moved restlessly now. Suddenly, the equine was face to face with her, and she stood completely still; frozen by the fear that sent a shock throughout her frame. The stallion wasn't much taller than she, though his muscles made him look much larger than he really was. His hide was darker than hers with dark eyes to match.
Xenosa pinned her harks and lifted her cranium higher, trying to make herself seem more bold. Her pale blue pools were like ice as they stared at the stallion. The world had gone completely silent in that moment. There was no sound of birds, and even the crashing water seemed to have faded into the distance. Ever so cautiously, the dove lowered her dial, her eyes now narrowed slightly. Neither of them spoke and that only made Xenosa more nervous. She hadn't realized how tensed her bodice had been until her muscles began to ache. However, as poised to flee as she was, there was a slight problem. The opening she'd aimed herself towards was the very opening he'd come through. While there were many other places to escape, Xenosa didn't know where those directions would lead her. This one would have taken her back to her cramped cave. At the time, that was all that had mattered. Getting back.
Finally, the femmora cleared her throat. Perhaps making peace with this stallion would mean she'd get away with her life and without other consequences. She'd encountered stallions before, but that had been some time ago. Those brutes had all shown her why trust was not an option. But, that didn't mean she couldn't sweet talk her way out of a situation, right? Yeah, right. The fact was, Xenosa's irate nature was merely a cover for her otherwise skittish nature. She'd always been told that those who live in fear are usually the first to go due to weakness of mind and body. Xenosa easily fell amongst the category, but at least she could pretend to be a fighter. Actually, she'd convinced herself that she wasn't skittish at all. To her own self, she was strong and could battle with the best of them. She'd blinded her own self to her true personality, and that alone was dangerous enough.
"Hello.." Her voice cracked as the words crossed her lips shakily and barely audible. She cleared her throat again. "Hello." She repeated, her voice more firm this time though it sounded forced. She continued to study the stallion. "Don't try anything stupid." She warned, though the warning sounded as if it were meant more for her instead of the stallion.
