Personality: Tucker has always been reserved and very in-tune with his sense of right and wrong. He was one to trust easily and never knowing love he thought he found it with the first mare that ignited his lust. Tucker is not very trusting after the events in his past and he assumes that he is being duped the majority of the time. For Tucker to have a true friendship, or even someday a relationship, would be a giant leap of faith. Tucker is loyal to those he trusts and feels an obligation to be kind to even those he has barely met. He is very protective of Magnolia but currently she is all he has and his greatest fear is that she will leave him to set out on her own and he will be utterly alone. He hopes to put himself out there and perhaps build some relationships that will give him at least surface friendships when the day arrives that she leaves him. He gets manic when she talks of growing up and going off to be free and his desperation is obvious by the tight rope he keeps on her. He is slowly realizing that love is not what he had for Clara, instead it was a wish to have love, but he doubts that love really exists when people are so cold and selfish. Tucker has never been selfish, even today he always thinks of others first, and he is fiercely co-dependent on Magnolia and believes that he can only achieve happiness through her happiness – he has convinced himself that he has no real emotions or feelings related to himself and that he is simply a conduit through which others can live to fulfillment.
History: Tucker was born to a small band of horses that was led by his father and his uncle who worked together. His parents were young and in love and Tucker was the first foal born and the only one born to the group that spring. Late in the summer of his first year, in fact almost fall, his uncles’ mate Lilah died giving birth to a colt later named Gideon. Gideon was then raised beside Tucker, his mother taking responsibility for both boys and they grew very close. Gideon was a troublemaker from the start, always bending the rules and sneaking out with Tucker following behind secretly delighted but outwardly scolding. His childhood was simple and filled with joy.
Once maturity was reached the pair decided to branch out away from their family although they didn’t travel far before Tucker met and became enamored with a young and feisty mare named Clara. She was like the wind, she warned him, and was just blowing through but Tucker would have none of it and when Clara discovered she was pregnant she agreed to stay. Gideon had gathered a few mares of his own but Tucker only had eyes for Clara and fell in love with the ideal image he had of her in his mind… although he never really took the time to know her. Clara was distant from the beginning but Tucker took care of her and they had a daughter in the early summer and named her Magnolia. She was the spitting image of her father and from birth the pair had a special bond but once Magnolia was born Clara seemed to be gone more and more often. Gideon as well seemed to be drifting away and he actually took to wandering with his mares whereas Tucker wanted to keep his family rooted down.
Once Magnolia was weaned Clara approached Tucker and told him that her time was done, she reminded him that she was the wind and she was restless. He tried to argue but she would have none of it and left him with his mouth agape and words of love given to deaf ears. She was venomous in his anger, telling him that he had caged her and spitting her resentments. Magnolia was a silent witness to this, hiding behind her father, while her mother raged on. Clara left them without a word to her daughter.
But Tucker could not let this go, his bones felt as if they would burst from his body and after Magnolia was laid to bed that night he left, at first just to wander and then to find comfort and advice from his friend who had been with him from childhood. He found Gideon that night and to his horror he also found Clara. Tucker who had always been sensible and calm felt a wave of anger rise up inside of him. At first it was just angry words but before long he was ready to fight his long-time friend. Gideon was smaller and Tucker was angry, the raw emotions he normally trapped within finally raging out, and he fought with venom. But he never intended what happened next. There was a hole, an uneven spot in the ground, and as Gideon backed up, trying to concede to his friend, explanations falling on deaf ears his foot landed in his this spot and with Tucker bearing down on him his leg crumpled beneath the weight of both equines. There was a sickening crack which was undoubtedly the bone in Gideons’ hind leg and Tucker backed up, horrified. He ran away as his friend screamed his agony, knowing all too well the fate of a horse with a broken leg.
The next morning he took his daughter and fled, the heavy knowledge that he had surely caused the death of his best friend heavy on his shoulders. Stopping very seldom he has traveled since and he is only stopping now at the insistence of Magnolia who is growing up quickly and resents her father for robbing her of friendships and a home. He has now promised that they can settle somewhere to still her tongue, as venomous as her mothers’ when provoked. And, although haunted by his guilt and grief, he too would benefit from building relationships once more.
